An Alternative Sleep Apnea Treatment to CPAP Therapy
An alternative sleep apnea treatment called Oral Appliance Therapy, uses a specialized mouthguard to treat sleep apnea. The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) defines these specialized mouthguards or oral appliances as Mandibular Advancement Devices because they hold your lower jaw (the mandible) slightly forward, preventing soft tissues from blocking your airway and causing you to snore.
Studies by AADSM report that therapy with a Mandibular Advancement Device is an effective treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and primary snoring. This treatment option provides a comfortable alternative, fits in your pocket, and there’s no need for power, hoses, or distilled water.
The mandibular advancement device is suggested for patients who do not tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. The suitability of MAD is based on a patient's specific condition, the severity of their sleep apnea, and their overall health profile.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – This is the most prevalent type of apnea, caused by an airway blockage that happens when the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses during sleep. This blocking of the airway may occur repeatedly throughout the night. When the airway begins to close off, the lack of oxygen causes the body to jerk awake and gasp for air. Symptoms include loud snoring, restless sleep, and daytime fatigue.
